Living Standard in India is rated poor

India has failed in ensuring better life for Indians and the saddest part of the story is that life is worsening year after year.

You do not believe it because you live in Metro and you are part of minuscule, infinitesimal, microscopic and negligible creamy layer of the Indian people on the scale of annual income. Your eye may believe the bitter truth once you read the news appeared in leading newspapers like Economic times on 6th October 2009.

But standard of living of largest chunk (95%) of Indian population has not improved despite all big talks of development and improvement in the country. It is the conclusion arrived at by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Human Development Index and it is sad that India is ranked 134 out of 182 countries.

To add fuel to fire on India’s image among world community of nations, Transparency International (TI) has ranked India among ten topmost corrupt countries of the world. You may see TI’s report published in the month of September this year which enlightens the scale of corruption prevalent in Indian politics, administration and corporate sector and also suggest the role of Private sector to fight it out.

It is a however a bad news for our beloved Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh, bad news for Mr. Chidambaram, Mr. Ahuliwalia, Deputy Governor of RBI and Mr. Pranab Mukharjee and a bad news for all those leaders of the country who feel pride in saying that India's GDP growth is the best compared to other countries of the world especially in the current year when there is global economic slowdown.

“What would you like to become after completing your education”,
If this question is raised to a grown up child of Indian average family,
the immediate reply will be “Either a politician or a corrupt officer”

Land Mafia and Education Mafia

Government of India is likely to bring a bill in the Parliament to monitor real estate sector and to protect the interest of home buyers from bad builders and developers. It is true there are many unscrupulous builders in our country who do not have valid documents to start construction but who have taken full payment of the flats they illegally sold to home seekers. There are many such builders whose landed property is disputed, who do not have duly approved map for construction. Many builders take advance booking and fail to complete the project in time and thus the home buyers stands cheated without any visible solution to his problem. All these problems are mounting alarmingly in most of the towns and it is very much urgent to enact suitable legislation to nip in the bud before the aggrieved people initiate a violent movement against the builders.

This is really a very good step and it will help preventing greedy builders, developers and fraudulent owners of property cheat the poor and innocent home seekers. There must be provision for stern punishment to those builders who fail to handover the possession of flats or house to home seekers strictly in time and of the quality as good as promised while accepting booking for a flat or a house. This will definitely create a healthy atmosphere and there will be a fear of action in the mind of bad builders and at the same time home buyers will feel safe in buying the flat. As a result of such safety steps taken by the government, more and more buyers of home will come forward and eventually increase the demand as desired by the government. It hardly matters whether interest rate is less or more by one or two percent for home loan seekers so far as buying a flat from such builders is concerned. Matter of safety is of paramount importance for those persons who intend to buy a flat. Undoubtedly government is moving in right direction.

It is worthwhile to suggest here that similar regulating body must be formed to monitor the opening and functioning of colleges and schools of higher and primary education with provisions for stern action against the person who charge exorbitant fees from students and fail to feed them quality education as promised in their prospectuses and as promised through advertisements. If government fail to take immediate steps to protect the interest of students there is no doubt that future of education will be jeopardized but also it will adversely affect the availability of job opportunities for such ill-fed and less talented students and ultimately endanger the education loan portfolio of various banks.

It is not out of place to mention here that government in the past has waived huge amount of small bad loans of the banks which became bad due to faulty policy of dirty politicians who indulged more in vote bank politics and less in social agenda. Similarly if education loan goes bad, government will face the worst kind of financial crisis in near future, worse than sub prime crisis of USA.

Last but not the least, need of the hour is to ensure execution of such healthy policies than to frame and forget the same. There has been unprecedented rise in prices in real estate as also education sector and they need close monitoring.

Bank employees on Strike

Government understands the language of violence, disturbances in public life and destruction of public property. Bankers are really simple and devoted workers that they have been in dialogue process with IBA, Indian Bankers Association for last two years patiently and peacefully. Wage revision of bank employees is due since November 2007 and the charter of demand was submitted to government in July 2007.Dialogue process has been continuing for last two years. It is sad that government understands the importance of any demand only when strikers burns the buses and trains, create road jams, blocks movement of train and what not. This has been seen in the case of strikers of other departments.

Government comes out of hibernation only when huge loss is incurred to exchequer. Ministers and the competent authority or labour commissioner have not understood the gravity of the matter, genuinity of demand of bank employees, and reality of bankers even after lapse of two years after the charter of demand was submitted to government of India and the IBA, Indian Banks Association an body which starts negotiation with banker's united forum on the issue of wage revision or other relevant demands.

Government has not tried to realize that workload on bank employees have multiplied during last two decades due to almost ban or regulated policy adopted by government on employment in banks during eighties and nineties, large scale removal of employees under voluntary retirement scheme VRS of the year 2000, the continuous natural retirement, dismissal and death of bank employees without fresh recruitment of at least same number of employees.

It is known to all that there has been technological upgradation in banks to a large extent during last two three years. But it was also made possible only by the hard labour done by experienced bank employees for more than 12 hours a day. Without disturbing customer service bankers took it a challenge, accepted new technology and converted most of the bank’s branches as CBS branch. Banks opened thousands of ATM, introduced E-Banking, Mobile banking, SMS banking, tele-banking and many other customer friendly services for the delightment of its customers. There has been continuous improvement in the services extended by bankers and it will not be an exaggeration to say that it is the only banks run by Government which extends services to the maximum possible satisfaction of its customers and on the contrary all other department of the government or most of the PSUs have failed to please their customers. Such paradigm shift occurred only due to efficiency exhibited by bank employees without disturbing routine normal works.

After adoption of Core Banking Solution ( called as CBS), Banks has introduced several other non-banking products like Insurance, demat service, share trading, selling of mutual fund products, tax collection, old age pension payment and many other products. It is only bank employees who accept newer and newer challenges and strive hard to please customers. It is unfortunate that bank employees are still in bad taste in corridors of Ministers.

It has to be kept in mind that there has been continuous wage erosion of bank employees during last two decades whereas on the contrary there has been quantum jump in the salary of state and central government employees through fifth and sixth pay commission report implementation. Frustration has been on increase among bank employees since long. To add fuel to fire media has tarnished the image of bank employees by creating false hype that bankers are high wage islanders. As a matter of fact wage disparity and , indifferent attitude of government has widened to such a large extent that bankers are opting for joining other private companies. There has been sharp change and reversal in choice and preference of job seekers. Three decades ago fresher used to prefer joining bank service than even IAS and IPS services. Present position is that even fresh graduate and post graduate prefers peon’s job in central services than joining as officer in a bank.

It is worthwhile to mention here that despite low wages and high work load it is banks which have been earning profit continuously and growing in profit year after year. On the contrary most of other businesses run by government are either showing loss or showing fall in profit or there is position of complete stagnation or on the verge of closure. Even companies like BSNL is likely to book loss to the tune of Rs10000/- crore and more. Indian airlines are running in losses in thousands of crores. All oil companies, fertilizer companies and many PSU are in losses and running on the aid and ventilator provided by Government. It is surprising that government had happily increased salary of even loss making companies by 30 to 60% through sixth pay commission on the eve of election just to enhance their vote bank and the same government thinks it fit to ignore genuine demand of 20% wage hike of bank employees on flimsy ground

Government instead of listening to banks argument in favour of their demand for 20% wage hike has been postponing dialogue on one plea or the other for last two years. The humiliating position for employees came to fore when government backtracked on its own commitment of 17.5% wage hike and green signal to second option of pension to bank employees on conditions mutually agreed upon by IBA and Bank Employee’s United Forum. Government first reduced the offer from 17.5% to 15% and when bank employees disagreed and preferred strike, government added fuel to fire by further reducing the offer from 15% to 13%. After such humiliation , it is but natural that bank employees will not only go on two days strike but resort to indefinite strike and many more steps in near future to pressurize the government to succumb to and understand the bitter truth and government should be held responsible for all types of inconvenience caused to customers due to strike.

It is to kept in mind that bankers are dealing in money and any dilution in honesty, sincerity and devotion of bank employees may cause irreparable damage to intrinsic health of banks. As of now corruption in banks is undoubtedly lower than all other departments of Government and other PSUs. Exodus of quality people may be harmful to banks. It is an open secret that banks have been used by politicians to enlarge their vote banks. Profitability of banks has suffered to a great extent due to vote bank policies of ruling party. Only God knows what will happen to bank if quality people leave the job and talented job seekers hate bank jobs.

Copy of my letter dated 203h March 2007

Government works only when there is mass agitation, large scale inconvenience to general public, demonstration, gherao of Parliament, misbehavior, violence and unrest throughout the country. Bankers are in agitation mood for last two years and more due to unresponsiveness of the government knowing very well that there is discrimination between SBI (last year government agreed to their demand when they went on indefinite strike) and other PSU banks as also private banks. Why? After all SBI and other banks are performing the same task. Government accounts are in all banks, government sponsored schemes are implemented equally in all banks including SBI, government revenues are collected in all banks and so on ......There should not be therefore any discrimination between employees of SBI and other PSU banks.

Government perhaps wants to divide the bankers and rule undemocratically . First they divided them in two groups - award staff and officer staff. Then Private and Public sector banks. Now SBI and non-SBI banks. Their divisive policy failed and now all nine unions of banks are united and they call strike from United Forum only and hence divisive policies of the government gets punctured.

Our constitution provides equal pay for equal work without any discrimination for gender, position, posting or any thing whatsoever it may be. Equal opportunity for all. Equal status and respect to all without any bias for caste or any community. Unfortunately ground reality is different. It is sad that government works without opening their eyes and ears. Ministers and administrative officers sitting at the helm of affairs are busy in their own welfare. Their wealth is growing day and night, by leaps and bounds. They do not even bother for constitution or for that matter any genuine demands of the public.

They are awakened from their deep slumber only when there is mass strike, mob indiscipline and mass destruction. In such case they may accede to ingenuine demands too. When the demand made by SBI last year was not ingenuine, how the same demand by other PSU banks are being ignored by the government. The only answer is that they want unrest, public upheaval and discomfort to all. In the recent past week, West Bengal CM Budhadeo Bhattacharya retreated only when there was mass destruction of public property and killings of innocent agitators.

Government knows very well that lacs of crores of banks assets are at risk in the hands of borrowers who have been financed from the banks and whose advances have become NPA. Government also knows that advances categorized are non-recoverable only because of corrupt and ineffective administration and judiciary throughout the country. Still government and party leaders at ground level are recommending financing to ineligible person to add fuel to fire. NPA are growing year after year .Data furnished by banks may be rosy to earn good wishes of the Ministry. But bitter truth is that two out of three borrowers are cheating the banks and it is true that management fails to recover the money from them. Government does not have any will to recover the money from such willful defaulters and help banks to raise their profitability. Rather banks are being compelled to show profit by way of cut in salary of employees and by exploitation of employees. See the extent of exploitation _

It is banks only where 8 to 8 banking and 7 day banking or anywhere banking is in practice. On the contrary for central and state government employees it is mostly 5 day working and 5 hours work practice. Why such discrimination between banking and non banking employees. It is therefore government to blame for strike in banks. Bankers are providing best customer service to its customers. In all other government departments in the country works MOVE more and more slowly and that too only after payment of some bribes to the dealing person.

Therefore even from the point of view of corruption too, bankers are more or less honest compared to employees of central and state government. .Why banks demands are then not heard by the government in time. What for there is frequent strike? Why government is silent spectator of malady prevailing in their own offices where salary is of little use for employees because they are more indulged in earning wealth by unfair means. At least government should learn lesson from the standard of salary offered by other private organization to their employees and where employees are nothing but loyal to their employer. In government departments on the other honest workers are tortured and shunted whereas dishonest but yes-men flourish speedily. What is this culture? Who is to blame for such unhealthy and unethical situation in the country. It is only Netas of the country who are to be blamed squarely for such large scale erosion in values.

Sach Ka Saman Serial on TV

Debate on whether the TV serial “Sach Ka Samna” contains objectionable contents is going on various forums of various other TVs. Question raised in such debates are many , few of them are given below:

1. Producer of the serial has pleaded that the question of truth of one's life is raised only after his or her consent and there is no wrong in it.

My comment:

What benefits are likely to accrue by exposure of truth of one's personal life to audience and viewer of TV?
If personal consent is enough to show objectionable material on TV, then there are many who can show on TV how he or she plays with spouse in night to produce a child.
There are so many persons in the country who enjoy many girls at one time and there is no doubt that with their consent producer may telecast their success story .There are many who indulge in child abuse, enjoy in molesting a girl, there are many in the society who are having affairs with other girls and wives of other person beyond the knowledge of his wife, many are having gay sex and so on……..

Is it useful for audience or viewers of TV to watch on TV such silly matters sitting with his family members including child who have no sense to distinguish between god and bad materials?

Child watching such silly serials may raise several other relevant questions with the parent or friends with a curiosity to understand a story for which he is not matured. There is no doubt that mind of such child may be polluted and there is every possibility of such child getting diverted from his right path leading to healthy educational degrees.

There are many dirty stories in one personal life, there are many bad elements who are performing only ill-works and causing irreparable damage to Indian culture and values.

Is it necessary for a producer to telecast such bad stories in Sach ka Samna serial only because he has taken consent from the person from whom such silly and objectionable questions are raised?

There are many madarsa and institutes in the country where child students are taught against the interest of the nation, of course with the consent of student and his parent. So many terror camps are going on in enemy country and terrorists are produced to conduct terror attacks in India, of course with the consent of terrorists. Then India will not have the right to raise objection on such terror camps because one becomes terrorist at his own, because such person does not want to become engineer or a doctor or a management guru.

Will producer of the serial prefer raising such silly questions to his own family members as asked to others on TV ?

2. Producers and some other participants in debates who are protagonist of worthless and dangerous serial like Sach Ka Samna argue that if viewers do not like such contents he or she can stop and switch over to other programme because he or she has got remote control in his or her hand.

My comment:

If remote control is enough to justify the rightfulness of the producer, then there is no doubt that in future such producer will show even porno pictures and leave the decision of viewing the same in the hands of viewers. Will our society permit such ugly scene to be telecast on TV? If yes, why then adults films are shown in late night only and why not the government should take back the guidelines restricting telecast of adult films in late night?

In future producer will start training class on sex, robbery, terrorism, benefits of drinking to promote sale of wine, benefits of tobacco to promote sale of cigarette, pan masala, ganja, charas, drugs and what not? Again he will argue that those who do not like such programme, remote may be used to stop the same.

In future producer will show how to act against the interest of the country to weaken the nation and strengthen enemy country, of course with the consent of government of enemy country and enemies of the nation.

Will our society permit such Sachs in the name of freedom? And are such silly serials in the interest of the country? If no, how long the government will continue to allow TV owners and producers to go beyond the Laxman Rekha in the name of freedom?

Can mere consent is enough in a democratic country like India to enjoy Right of Freedom?

Do freedom of right means to make noise in night or play music at high pitch during late hours in night?

Does freedom means to urinate on road and in temple and masjid or gurudwaras and churches?

If it is so , scientists will have to invest remote control for ear and nose also so that whenever ugly scene appears on road, public places or in other places he will shut the functioning of eyes and ears.

3. Producer further argue that people of India like such serials and this is indicated by TRP of such serials? When he further argues that when people like such material, why some section of society should have objection on it?

My comment:

I do not want to repeat what I have narrated above.

But I would like to mention here that it is the unfortunate part of human nature that he or she adopts bad habits more easily and comfortably than good things. It is human being that they have huge greed for money, wine and sex whereas animals who though perform acts without any curtain have limitation on their food habits, or sexual matters. Human being can eat anything if served free of cost, but animal eats only when the food is as per his choice.

This is why so many moral lessons are taught to child by parent and school teachers to maintain certain level of discipline in family and the society. Government of a country makes so many rules just to fight out the evil-doers from the society and create healthy mage of the country. India is respected in the world for its value system, for stable family culture and not because of serial like Sach ka Samna or K-serials or due to telecasting of porno films.

So far as TRP is concerned I like to attract the mind of the said producer towards the most popular serials like Mahabharat, Ramayan, Buniyad, Sri Krishna, Abhitabh’s KBC, Indian Idol, Laughter Challenge of Sidhu, Lil Champ, Buggie Buggie and hundred of others whose TRP may be considered to be the highest among all serials of various TV channels, and at least higher than the most condemned serial like Sach ka Samna.

Is it the way to earn money as producer of serials like Sach Ka Samna claim to be?

Why does he not open Dance bars, Brothels, Wine shops to earn money and only money?

Is there no meaning of social values for producer of the disputed serial?

Last but not the least, why have the producer chosen dirty materials to increase TRP?

Is there any crisis of good materials and are the producers of serials like Mahabharata, Ramayana, and other serial named above are poorer than him?

4. Some of the protagonists of above mentioned serials say that there are so many other serials and ads telecast on TV which are worse and contain so many objectionable materials.

My comments:

If others are committing crime, it does not give right to me to commit crime or justify crime committed by me.
If society is inflicted of so many evils, it does not mean to add further scope of promotion of newer evils or promotion of existing evil.
If government is unable to control and check existing bad habits prevailing in the society, it does not give anyone right to promote additional bad habits and condemnable Bakwas in the society to add fuel to fire.
If government is unable to stop terror attacks from across the border or to stop heinous acts committed by domestic Naxalites, it does not mean that government has permitted everyone to indulge in act of murder, rape, loot, robbery and exploitation of society.
If school and college administration are unable to stop or minimize use of unfair means in the examination, it does not give right to students to adopt unfair means while answering questions in the examination.
If government is unable to stop corruption in government departments, judiciary. Colleges, Universities, customs and elsewhere it does not mean that every citizen has got Constitutional right to indulge in corrupt practices.
If government is unable to stop price rise due to hoarding and black marketing by rich traders, it does not mean that government has permitted unwarranted exploitation of consumers by businessmen.

As such there must be Laxman Rekha in all spheres of life and it is only self control which can keep the society healthy and prosperous. However the role of the government is equally important to regulate the behavior of persons whose act affects adversely the overall behavior of the society and overall image of the nation.

I lastly appreciate and praise TV channels which are at least promoting healthy debate on such issues and which will definitely result in imposing ban on serials which damages the cultural values of the society and the Nation. After all we are living in democratic country where debate is the ultimate powerful weapon in the hands of common men and these debates will help us sustaining social values intact.
